- Describe the responsibilities of the job and required credentials to achieve the position.

  • The responsibilities of the job are to instruct garment measurements and construction to enable the production of prototypes and functional, wearable pieces/ The required credentials for this position are that one needs a degree or HND in clothing/fashion technology or a related/similar subject. Another option is for internal progression for those already working in the industry is also possible, like how a Product Technologist Apprenticeship is available for those wishing to train on the job.

- What college majors provide the training for this career?

  • Degrees include a Fashion design degree, Fashion styling degree, Fashion manufacturing degree. Majors include Creative Fashion Design, Drafting and Sewing, History of Costume/Fashion, Textile Science, and Computer Applications and Pattern Drafting.

  • The science and mechanics behind garment technology are very interesting for me and it is part of the fundamental science that I do in creating my pieces and taking great interest in the fashion in art.

  • People can make a lot of money as a top garment technologists for important companies and clients and I was surprised how well funded they can be when they are good at their craft and make it to the top.
