Artist Statement
Art is the freedom of expression where the possibilities are limited to your imagination. My inspiration stems from a desire to elevate ordinary materials to another level through fashion and sculpture. I create art to satisfy my inner self and show more of my passions, technique, and ideas. My goal is to inspire others with my work, encouraging them to repurpose and reuse objects around them, and to bring their own meaning and definition to what art is.
The fuel for my work comes from seeing the various wastes and abundance of anything I have around me. By bending, twisting, attaching, and forming materials into something new, I create sculptures that hold greater meaning and purpose. I play with the composition, texture, and content of my works depending on the material. Not only do I work with the material, but the material also works for me. When I create my work, I do not always know what my end result will look like. I let the inspiration and heat of the moment control my decisions and movements in my creation. By trying new things and finding unique solutions to issues that arise in my process, I am able to create individual pieces that capture my purpose and reveal my journey.
The meaning of my work is much greater than one statement or purpose. My work takes on waste and confronts the fact that our world has an abundance of casted-away material that struggles to be reused and improved to better our communities. It is a statement on the fashion industry, the issues within it, and how there are problems with societal views on what is and is not beautiful. Grown from an initial desire to create something original and interesting, the meaning of my work translates into a variety of emotions, controversies, and changes that are prominent in everyday life. I seek to challenge societal norms and create new beauty with my works by extending possibilities and doing the unthinkable.
