Each quarter, students should find one professional, living artist who’s work they like or that has similar qualities to their own work. Research this artist. Post basic facts (website, gallery representa- tion, CV highlights) as well as articles, images, or videos of art- works with “reactions” to them. Be conscious of trends in contem- porary art. For individual works, please make sure to include label information. A reaction might include a statement about what you like or dislike about the piece, what ideas or processes might influ- ence your own work.
Lilly May is a Maggie L. Walker Alumni and she is an illustrator
She creates graphic novels/graphic art and does commissions for clients
Her work consists of LGTBQ+ representation and the stories and backgrounds of people who are out of the norm
From Lilly, I learned that the process for creating a work, no matter what it is, differs from work to work.
In a professional environment, deadlines are a big thing to look out for and be mindful of.
When coming up with a piece, there is a lot of visual development from thinking, to brainstorming, to scripting, and eventually arriving at a rewarding point when it all comes together
From Lilly, I learned about her process as an illustrator and graph artist and how she first create a script, then a thumbnail, then develop color keys to reflect emotion, then ink, color and finish!
She recommended to us that keeping a daily schedule was very important and to be healthy and use communication and reach out.
She taught me that a big part of art in the real world is being able to reach out, email, and find people to show off, sell, and support you as an artist.
Social media is very important and is a critical form of marketing.
Overall, I will use her processes to develop my work and become smarter about how I go about things. I learned a lot more about what art in the real world looks like realistically and I was very inspired by her goals and her plans for the future with her graphic novels.
