What I learned: I learned about the importance of persistence and working hard towards developing skills that you desire. Stanley was not born a great portrait artist, but thanks to Coach Hall and his own determination, he was able to refine his skills and go to art school. I learned to be fluid in school and in the workplace because life changes and that's okay. I learned about balance between what you want to do and what is, logistically, the most sense. I learned about how life throws curveballs and you're not always going to end up where you think you will.
What surprised me: The sheer amount of paintings and work he is doing and would do in order to improve his skills and not fall out of touch. I was also surprised by how much he knew he disliked illustration and was able, to be honest with himself. How things turned sideways, but how he was able to work through it and be successful. As well as how he was able to put family first when they needed it, he didn't feel he lost anything and still felt in touch with his artistic side.
What questions do I still have: Why did he choose to go into portraits/start drawing people in high school? How long does each piece take to make? What does he hope to do in the future?
